A Goldfinch flies into my window............................ a bit stunned but survives

I was sat watching the television last night when I heard a bang on the window.
My bird feeders are close to the house and a Goldfinch had flown straight into my patio window.

After flying into a rose bush and getting caught up in the thorns...
...it freed itself then landed on the ground just a few feet from the window it had crashed into.

Obviously stunned and in shock it lay still for over 20 minutes... eyes shut tight as it rested.

Eventually it started to recover... becoming aware of it's surroundings.
I was lying on the floor to captured these images... it's the closest I've been to a Goldfinch.

I was so pleased to see it fly off just a few minutes later... hopefully non the worse for it's mishap.

  8. Goldfinches are such beautiful birds.
I often have birds flying in to my windows too, but find that if I leave them they usually recover as yours did - sadly sometimes they do not.

  11. It's always a relief when they recover and fly away. It's usually starlings that fly into our patio doors.

  17. Great shots, but poor little guy. You know you can get window decals so the birds won't crash into the windows. http://www.windowalert.com/windowalert.html?gclid=CJvNu67wjrcCFfE7MgodtEMA5A

  21. That's one lucky bird! Many of them die doing that. You got some great shots, though.

  22. Beautiful bird! Glad to know it came out of its stunned state. We had a few fly into windows also, and through the Audubon Society I ordered several 'clear' decals [they're kinda opaque] of different birds and stuck them to our glass doors and windows. YOU can see through them without much notice through the human vision. But the birds can see them as they fly --- hence when they see this decal, they won't fly into the glass. And, very very inexpensive.

  23. That was a close call, fancy there was a cat around, horrible. Poor Goldfinch. Really superb photos.

  24. Awww, glad the little guy is alright. When birds fly into our windows and stun themselves I put on gloves and go out and pick them up and hold them gently between my two gloved hands. They need their body temperature to rise again. I can't tell you how many birds I have saved this way. Even a tiny hummingbird! It's so gratifying to see them take wing again.

Our goldfinches here in the States look very different from yours.

  26. What wonderful photographs.
What really struck me was the brilliant red feathers.

We had two young green finches fly into our window all at once, once. They then spent a couple of days on our balcony recovering. We put out water for them and some seed and I was just wondering what I should do next when off they flew!

  31. Nice shooting from the 'prone' position Andrew. Golfinches have been regular visitors to our feeders this year but never THAT close!

  32. Nice story and nice shots. Goldfinches always seem too colourful to be a British bird.

    Good thing she has survived.

  34. Awe how fortunate for the Goldfinch. Most of ours survive, but at the end of my post on currently, a Yellow-Shafted Flicker was not so fortunate~
