Ladybird ladybird fly away home......................................................................

It's been a lovely warm sunny day with temperatures reaching 19c.
Unfortunately I was at work this morning... returning home I went into the garden to have a tidy up and top up the feeders... it was warm enough to leave my french doors open.... when I went back inside this little fella was crawling around the floor.

A Seven-spot Ladybird (Coccinella 7-punctata) a common species but a new visitor to my home.

I grabbed the camera and captured these images.. heavily cropped.
Ladybirds are only 7-9mm in length.

It was scuttling around looking for a way out... so I opened the garden doors a bit wider.

You can see his wing case (elytra) opening just before it flew over to the door.

A quick look outside... then it was off.

Every time I see a ladybird it reminds me of the poem from my childhood.
The English rhyme dates from around 1744... other country's will have their own version.

                                                Ladybird, ladybird fly away home,
Your house is on fire and your children are gone,
                                                All except one,
                                                And her name is Ann,
And she hid under the baking pan.

The warm sunny weather is forecast to continue tomorrow... the walking boots are by the front door and the cameras are ready... Sunday is my favourite day of the week.... enjoy yours.

My Mother use to tell me that Lady Bugs were good luck and are good for your garden.

We get millions of these little ladies around our house each summer. One year a few made their way into the house and were still alive two months later when I found them!

In a way they are good luck, they eat other insects that can do a lot of damage to your garden. Hope the warm stays for you and that you have a great weekend.

loving the lady-bird Drew and I do remember the little poem. Those olde-worlde poems are funny to read back on, quite how they were constructed verbally and yet they lingered on forever, right up until your last post. Would you think our blog posts see it around again all those years later by someone? Looking forward to your Sunday trek with cameras.

What great photos! How often do you get to see a ladybug getting ready for flight! Very cool!

Wonderful set of photographs--so clear and close! We have quite the ladybug situation at our house each spring. They are apparently attracted to white (the outside of our house is white), and nestle in crevices over the winter. Many don't make it through--they dry out, poor things--but those that do are coming out all over the house. Part of the rhythm of the seasons here; another sign of spring.

Love your close-ups! We used to get thousands of ladybugs in the fall at another house we lived in. Some of them would get in the windows and die and we would have to vacuum up all the little dead bodies. The live ones stunk, too.

Hi Andrew,
There seems to be quite a glut of these little creatures everywhere I look at the moment, hopefully that means that the aphids will be kept in check for this year!

these are great, i have tried once to get a good shot of the tiny little ladies, but not as good as these. i really like that last shot, my first time ever to see one open like that

Love the last shot so much! I usually pick them up and put them back outside. I have also been known to pick them up from the pavement to avoid other people crushing them...

I'm told that our indigenous species are at risk because of an Asian species though...

Hope you are having a better Sunday than I am. Badly sprained my ankle, on sick leave and looking longingly at the blue sky through the window!

Happy Sunday to you too! Familiar rhyme....and I always loved those little creatures until one Fall when they invaded our RV -- we had zillions of them in there looking for a winter home. Actually I still love them -- it was just that one year when, for a short time, I didn't!
