While we were at Erddig last weekend it was lovely to watch all the Coot chicks on the ponds.
There were loads of young chicks still being fed by their parents...
...and were quite happy to come close for a photo.
These younger chicks were all on a small pond near the flower beds.
Over on the big pool older juveniles were fending for themselves.
I managed to get within a few feet as they are so used to the visitors.
No chance of getting this close to them on my local river... their far more wary...
... and just look at those amazing feet... and this is just a youngster.

So ugly they're cute. I love the feet in the last photo.
yup, so darn ugly and cute coots!
Coot chicks sure got short-changed in the cuteness department. I've never seen young coots before.
Beautiful chicks, thanks Andrew.
Super set of images Andrew.
Great seeing them in all of the different ages!
The young ones look funny with the bald heads! That last photo is awesome!
They are ugly birds but they do have amazing feet.
Great photos of all those juveniles. They are cute, and scruffy and quite ugly!
I don't think they'll win any beauty contests with their bald heads and they do have weird feet, but what great shots for the day, Andrew! Hope you have a good week!!
Great close ups!! Boom, Bobbi and Gary.
I've never really noticed their feet before (probably because they are under water), and they sure are huge.
I just love the Coot Chicks, I think they are adorable.. Great shots.

The very young chicks are very, very ugly!! And we have the same species in Australia - and they don't look any better there!
Hope all is well.

You wouldn't think that those chicks would grow in to such handsome birds. From Findlay
yes the feet of a Coot are amazing. now on,y a mother Coot could love their tiny babies!!
First time to see coot babies (even virtually) ... although we see rafts of them on "our" Lake in Oregon almost every summer. Maybe not this year, since we're in Alaska instead.
Pretty cute little ones. Great shots, Andrew.
