It always boggles my mind that there are so many birds in other places that I have never seen (and may never see). Your birds are beautiful and all so very different than my birds even though some go by the same names. Your Sparrowhawk is much like our Sharpshin or even Coopers Hawk, though the Coopers Hawk are bigger and the eyes are red. The American Kestrel is often called a Sparrow Hawk in different parts of the country so it could all get very confusing ... But I love learning about them so I have greatly appreciate your posts over the year. I hope this New Year does bring you more of the same and some different for you to share with us ... Happy New Year, Andrew!

Pretty variety of birds. The Goldfinches are my favorite!

No, don't cover up the hole in the fence. I think it is wonderful that some birds consider the hole to be the entrance to your yard, and come through there rather than flying over the top of the fence. This is one of the funniest, best things in my experience as a blogger...birds sneaking in the hard way instead of taking the easy way in.
The first photo here is my favourite. So funny, the Great Tit clinging to the bird feeder but leaning 'way out to the side to investigate green buds.
I'm not a birder, but I love to see birds.
Happy New Year to you and yours, Andrew.

Nice shots! I actually saw a goldfinch two days ago - not a lot of overlap between the birds we see day by day!

Thanks for all the comments over the past year!

all great shots Andrew but I'm kind of amazed at the 'blue' hues on the magpie; that really shows up well. The Siskin reminds me of a canary. Love the robin, as always. Best wishes for 2014

Absolutely outstanding!!! Now, I have a question...that peanut feeder...where do you buy peanuts for birds? They are raw peanuts, right? I have a feeder like yours, but I used some manufactured nuggets that was supposed to be a bird food, but the birds never touched them. I want to fill it with peanuts.
