In yesterdays post I mentioned the architect Richard Harding Watt.
Watt designed the Gaskell Memorial Tower on King Street built in 1907 to commerate the Victorian novelist Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) whose most famous work "Cranford" was based on Knutsford... the town she grew up in.
King Street is full of restaurants and wine bars... it's a busy place in the evening.

Legh Road
Watt also designed some wonderful properties.
Legh Road doubled for colonial Shanghai in the opening scenes of the Steven Spielberg film"Empire of the Sun"
In recent years Knutsford was named as the most expensive town to buy a house in northern England.
Current properties for sale include one going for £5,950,000 thats $9,539,635.
I couldn't get anywhere near that one.
Hey in that first picture - I thought it had to be a one way street - I enlarged it and no - it was a two way street!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteI wonder if Knutsford has a viking history? Knut is a common man's name over here.
Quite an internting town. The older building mostly have small and fewer windows than today, must be rather dark inside.
